With GHOSTS, Violeta Andreu denounces the lack of legal identity for thousands of babies as one of the scars of armed conflict, specifically the Israeli invasion of Palestine. It is an action that calls for reflection on this reality and for solidarity with these children and mothers, urging us to consider how to remedy this identity exclusion. These babies officially do not exist.

GHOSTS, in turn, consists of a photographic series.

Ghost babies is the term the UN uses to refer to the more than 10,000 babies born in Palestine who have not been registered with the Civil Registry since October 2023. This means they are denied access to basic social services such as healthcare, education, and housing, and also lack a sense of belonging to a place or a country. They are children without legal identity and stateless. Officially, these babies do not exist.

Through a symbolism of being and not being, existing and not existing, Violeta Andreu presents this new performance to bring this situation to light and appeals to our solidarity and reflection with these babies and their mothers. In it, she uses a flag of which we only know its shadow; white as a plea for a ceasefire, a right to peace, and a symbol of unregistered identities. And she includes a thousand white sheets of paper with Palestinian names that we know exist, but that have not been written in ink, have not been registered.
