Semiotics of the house

Semiotics Of The House

SEMIOTICS OF THE HOUSE is conceived in two formats: a performance and a video performance.

The work, adapted from the research conducted in “The House in Visual Artistic Creation and its Relationship with Feminism (1970-2020)”, is presented as a remake of “Semiotics of the Kitchen”, which Martha Rosler created in 1975. Rosler, in turn, parodied Julia Child's 1960s television cooking show, imitating her abrupt gestures and presentations of food and utensils.

In SEMIOTICS OF THE HOUSE, Andreu presents, with stark signs of frustration, the artistic concepts about the house explored in the book. She demonstrates anger at the identification of women with domestic care and, primarily, at the fact that it is the most dangerous place for them, the space where the most violence against women occurs. By equating domestic space with artistic space, her gestures also serve as a protest against the treatment of women in the art world, their invisibility, and therefore, the existing inequality. The artist presents the house-museum space as a space of change and transformation.
