Violeta Andreu addresses the issue of motherhood and raises the need
to reconceptualize it, so that it is an option for women, an
individual decision and not a vital purpose. NOMA is a demand to stop
socially perceiving motherhood as the greatest happiness for women and
to abandon the pressure that, at both a family, social and
institutional level, is exerted on women who decide not to be mothers.
The completeness of a woman who decides not to be a mother is
vindicated. And the word NOMA (No Mother) is proposed, which defines
this option of women.
In the 90s, a movement of women emerged in the United States who, out
of desire and conviction, did not want to be mothers. They soon became
known as NoMo women (No Mother or No Mothers). For something to exist
it must be named. In this performance, Andreu proposes the word NOMA,
which defines this option for women and maintains the development of
the group created appropriate to our language, which does distinguish
between genders.
