WOMANHOUSE

WOMANHOUSE is a project that unfolds in various formats: performance, video performance and photography.

The performance took place in the artist's studio in Madrid, Spain, as a domestic space open to the public on February 2, 2022. In it, Andreu emerges naked from inside a cardboard box and begins to move, trying to remove the cardboard lid. The performance unfolds in silence.

The cardboard box is identified with the house and conceals the woman until she decides to move and tear down this “cardboard ceiling”, a sticky ceiling of domestic space that must be shed without relinquishing the home as a liberating space. It is the woman who must fight to break free from all that society expects of her within a home simply for being a woman: caring for her husband, partner, children, the elderly, the house itself… and, against violence within the home (sexist, domestic, assaults…). The struggle ends when the body clears the cardboard lid and remains curled up in the fetal position inside the box, returning to the maternal womb, to the mother's home. A new relationship with domestic space is defined, a positive attitude toward the home, free and open to the outside world.
